National Parks of Assam

1. Kaziranga National Park lies on the banks of mighty Brahmaputra river covering an area of 430 Sq km. It lies partly in Golaghta District and partly in Nagoan District of AssamIt is a world heritage site and is well known for the successful conservation of one horned Great Indian Rhinoceros. Today it is the home to more than 70% of world's population of Indian Rhinoceros. The wild elephant, another exotic animal found in herds number over 700 here.

There are over 600 wild buffalo which is another attraction in this reserve. The fauna also includes mouse deer, hog deer, barking deer, chinkara gazelle, bears, leopards, wild boars and the gaur. You can get more information here

2. Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is located in the Tinsukia District of Assam. It is a National Park as well as Biosphere reserve covering an area of 340 Sq km. Around 36 species of mammals are found here including Tiger, Elephant, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Bears, Small Indian Civet, Squirrels, Gangetic Dolphin, Slow Loris, Assamese Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Capped Langur, Hoolock Gibbon, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Water Buffalo, Feral Horses etc.
The migratory birds are a major attraction. More than 382 species of Birds are found, some of which are Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Greater Crested Grebe, Large Cormorant, Open bill Stork, Black necked Stork, Large Whistling Teal, Grey leg Goose, Grey-headed Fishing Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Osprey, Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot Billed Pelican, White Winged Wood Duck, Baer's Pochard, Greater Spotted Eagle, Pale Capped Pigeon, Great Pied Hornbill, Marsh Babbler, Jerdon's Babbler, Black Breasted Parrot bill, etc. The park is renowned for natural regeneration of Salix trees.
3. Manas National Park is situated on the foothills of the Himalayas and a part of it extends to Bhutan. It was declared a sanctuary on October 01, 1928 and was designated a World Heritage site in December 1985. Named after the river Manas, which separates India from Bhutan, the park has dense deciduouas forest which spread over an area of 2840 Sq km. It is famous for its majestic tigers and golden leaf monkey. Endangered species like Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog and Red Panda are found here. Other wildlife includes Wild Buffalo,Capped Langur, Indian one-horned Rhinoceros, Elephant, Gaur, Hog Deer, etc. Birds found here include giant horn bills, pheasants, jungle fowl, scarlet minivet, partridge, florican and variety of water birds.
